Bill Would Register People To Vote When Getting Driver's Licenses

MADISON, Wis. (WTAQ) - A new bill would automatically register Wisconsinites to vote when they apply for a driver’s license or plates for their vehicles. Democrats introduced that measure and other election reforms Thursday. They said it would improve voter access to elections, make things easier for local clerks, and make sure all votes count. The bill would also create satellite voting centers for absentee ballots – and it would bring Wisconsin in line with a new federal law that makes it easier for military personnel to vote absentee.

Assembly Elections Committee chairman Jeff Smith of Eau Claire calls the bill a “common sense approach in today’s electronic age.” He said lawmakers must act on the military provision before the current session ends April 22nd. And because of that, he believes the other reforms have a chance to pass as well. The bill would also try to stop intimidation of voters. It does not include a long-time wish by Republicans to make voters show photo ID’s at the polls.
